SHORE POWER

The marine shore power system refers to the overall equipment that supplies shore power to docked ships.

Stopping the ship’s generator and using shore power during the ship’s berthing period
can improve overall efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions to a certain extent.

Why ships should use shore power?

Traditional ships rely on auxiliary engines to generate electricity 24h/day when docked,
causing three critical issues:

High fuel consumption

Auxiliary engines burn costly diesel continuously.

Severe pollution

Exhaust (CO₂, sulfides) and particulate matter degrade air quality.

Noise pollution

>90dB noise disrupts crew and port operations.

Shore Power (Cold Ironing) replaces onboard generators with land-based electricity, achieving zero fuel consumption, zero emissions, and silent operation during berthing.

Core Components of Ship Shore Power Systems

A complete shore power system operates through three integrated modules

Module

Function

Key Equipment

Shore-based Power Supply

Converts port grid power to ship-compatible electricity

Port substation, shore power box-type substation (transformer/frequency converter)

Ship Receiving System (AMPS)

Receives and regulates shore power input

Ship switchboard, voltage stabilizer

Ship switchboard, voltage stabilizer

Enables rapid cable connection between dock and vessel

HV cable reel, smart connection cabinet

Shore Power System

Working Environment

  • Temperature: Indoor -5℃~40℃ / Outdoor -20℃~50℃
  • Humidity: ≤95% at ≤45℃ | ≤70% at >45℃
  • No conductive or explosive dust, no gas or vapor that corrodes metal or damages insulation

System Parameters

  • High Voltage(HV): 6kV/10kV,50Hz(Input); 6.6kV,60Hz/6kV,50Hz(Output)
  • Low Voltage(LV): 0.4kV/6kV/10kV,50Hz(Input); 0.45kV,60Hz/0.4kV,50Hz(Output)

Critical Shore Power System Designs

  • Relay Protection: Triple-layer protection (overcurrent/short circuit/leakage) for safety.
  • Smart Monitoring: Real-time voltage/load/energy tracking with remote control.
  • Lightning & Grounding: 10/350μs surge protection, grounding resistance ≤4Ω.
